Mercedes Vision R 63 AMG

Output and torque in abundance, an exclusive appearance and first-class travelling comfort are key attributes of the „Vision R 63 AMG“, a particularly dynamic, near-series interpretation of the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class. This AMG showcar is the crowning glory of a unique concept developed by Mercedes-Benz, which combines the advantages of familiar vehicle types such as sporty luxury saloons, estates, MPVs and SUVs.

The Grand Sports Tourer made by Mercedes-AMG is powered by the all-new, completely independently developed AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with an output of 375 kW/510 hp and a maximum torque of 630 newton metres, producing the performance levels of a sports car. Featuring permanent all-wheel drive, an AMG sports suspension based on the AIRMATIC air suspension system, and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT seven-speed automatic transmission with gearshift paddles, the „Vision R 63 AMG“ guarantees its six occupants a sporty driving experience of the highest order.

Alongside the series-production version of the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class, whose short wheelbase variant is celebrating its world premiere at the show, the „Vision R 63 AMG“ with a long wheelbase, an avant-garde design and an extravagantly styled interior, will appear in the role of a sporty and dynamic trendsetter. An unrivalled power unit, generous spaciousness, top-class comfort and an impressive appearance are uniquely combined in a completely new interpretation.

Avant-garde exterior with dynamic highlights

The „Vision R 63 AMG“ confirms its exceptional position in the automotive market right from the very first glance. Externally, numerous details distinguish the muscular showcar from the series-production R-Class. The bodywork of the almost 5.20-metre long „Vision R 63 AMG“ is resplendent in „dark titanium grey“, with all items of external trim in matt titanium grey rather than the standard shining chrome. These include the trim strips on the radiator grille, the circular foglamp surrounds in the front apron, all window surrounds, the door handle inserts and the boot handle. The newly designed front apron has the typical AMG look and features large air intakes with black expanded-mesh covers, an unmistakable indication of the extraordinary power residing in the new AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine. Bi-xenon headlamps with matt titanium coated reflectors and titanium-look indicators are further highlights. Sheer dynamism is suggested by the muscular rear apron with the two integral, chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Massive, matt titanium-painted 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke design with 265/40 R 21 wide-base tyres fill the generous wheel arches and lend another striking aspect to the side view of the Grand Sports Tourer. Behind the spokes of the AMG light-alloy wheels it is possible to discern the generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated discs all-round, which ensures extremely short braking distances and high fade resistance.

Sports-car performance thanks to an output of 375 kW/510 hp

The impressive bonnet of the „Vision R 63 AMG“ conceals the new AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine. With an output of 375 kW/510 hp at 6800 rpm and 630 newton metres of torque at 5200 rpm, this newly-developed, large-displacement AMG V8 engine makes for a supremely assured and dynamic driving experience coupled with the performance potential of a thoroughbred sports car. It accelerates the Grand Sports Tourer to 100 km/h in approximately five seconds, with a maximum speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Thanks to its large displacement, the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine in terms of specific output and specific torque generates around 20 percent more torque than comparable units in this output class. This unique combination of a high-revving design and a large displacement offers the best of both worlds: exhilarating liveliness accompanied by powerful torque at low engine speeds, as well as great agility and dynamic responsiveness in all engine speed ranges, are the typical attributes of this new AMG powerpack.

40:60 torque distribution for great agility

The „Vision R 63 AMG“ has permanent all-wheel drive, with the power transferred to the front and rear axles on a 40:60 basis to ensure outstanding agility and cornering characteristics. Gearshifting is by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT seven-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC with a DIRECT SELECT shift lever. DIRECT SELECT has enabled the transmission tunnel to be completely redesigned, the absence of a shift lever providing plenty of space for covered stowage compartments and a large cup holder.

The close spacing of the seven gears ensures that the optimum ratio is available, thereby optimising the sporty performance. As in a sports car, the seven gears can be changed by means of gearshift paddles on the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel.

Three shift programmes for perfect driving pleasure

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC transmission allows both a dynamic and a comfort-oriented style of driving. Three shift modes specially configured for the sporty performance characteristics of the AMG V8 engine ensure that the power is used to best effect. These shift modes — „S“ (Sport), „C“ (Comfort) and „M“ (Manual) – are selected using a switch in the centre console and differ in their gearshift characteristics. In the manual „M“ mode the driver gets additional benefit from the high torque of the V8 engine, as the transmission does not perform an automatic downshift under full load or during kickdown, but rather remains reliably in the selected gear. Neither does AMG SPEEDSHIFT perform an automatic upshift when the engine speed limit is reached in manual mode. This means that the more sporty driver is able to make even fuller use of the effortless performance potential.

AMG sports suspension based on AIRMATIC air suspension

The newly developed AMG sports suspension is based on the AIRMATIC system with the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) and allows the driver to select a dynamic or more comfortable suspension setting at the touch of a button, as required. There is a choice of three characteristic maps, and AIRMATIC also has an automatic level control function which lowers the suspension during fast motorway driving, thereby reducing air resistance.

Variable interior with an exclusive feel-good atmosphere

The variable interior of the „Vision R 63 AMG“ impresses with its generous spaciousness, exceptional freedom of movement, stylish colour scheme and great opulence, with an immediate and exclusive feel-good atmosphere. Nappa leather for all six seats, a leather roof lining in metallic titanium and black leather on the door panels further enhance the exclusive look and feel, with colour-coordinated, double topstitching in titanium as a contrast. A sporty atmosphere is provided by the AMG sports seats in the first two rows and the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles, plus an AMG instrument cluster with its specially styled markings, red pointers and a speedometer scale which extends up to 320 km/h. The large dial instruments projecting from circular, slightly inwardly inclined cylinders are framed by matt titanium surrounds, while an aluminium panel between them frames the multifunction display; it is also in matt titanium and bears the letters AMG.

Matching the external appearance of the AMG showcar, almost all the interior trim is finished in matt titanium grey — for example the trim strips on the instrument panel and doors, the trim parts and trim rings on the COMAND system, on the air conditioning control unit, on the steering-column stalks and the light switches, the door sills with the illuminated AMG logo, the rubber-studded sports pedals and the KEYLESS-GO starter button. As an elegant contrast the decorative trim on the front centre console is in black piano lacquer. The sophisticated interior of the showcar underlines the painstaking attention to detail with which AMG designers and technicians created the „Vision R 63 AMG“. Hand-finished materials such as wood, leather and aluminium offer a feast for the senses, and a passion for precision is discernible everywhere in the luxurious interior.

The seats in the second row can be repositioned longitudinally and feature adjustable armrests for the best possible long-distance comfort. The single seats in both rear seat rows can be individually folded down as required, and the rear centre console is easily removable. This allows the interior to be adapted to suit with changing space requirements or transport tasks – carrying mountain-bikes, skis, snowboards or other recreational equipment is no problem. Even when the vehicle is carrying six occupants, there is still sufficient room to accommodate a large golf bag behind the third seat row.

With the rear seats folded down, the level loading surface has a length of 2217 millimetres measured from the front seat backrests to the tailgate. At a maximum of 2385 litres (acc. to VDA measuring method) when loaded to roof height, the loading volume exceeds the capacity of large estate cars. With the third seat row folded down, the Vision R 63 AMG has a maximum load capacity of 1067 litres.

Rear entertainment system with DVD player and four flat-screen monitors

Thanks to a DVD player, passengers in the second and third rows are able to enjoy their own programme of entertainment in the „Vision R 63 AMG“. Four 7-inch TFT flat-screen monitors are integrated into the head restraints of the front seats. For optimum convenience and a relaxed journey there are two folding tables for the individual centre seats, as well as the multi-zone THERMOTRONIC climate control system which ensures a pleasant interior climate for all six occupants.

Panoramic sliding roof increases the feeling of spaciousness in the interior

The Vision R 63 AMG is also equipped with a panoramic sliding sunroof as standard, whose technology and size are unique. It provides a continuous area of glass extending from the windscreen to the rear aerial, and therefore allows a great deal of light into the interior even when closed. The result is an enhanced feeling of spaciousness and an even more enjoyable journey for the passengers. The transparent glass surface of the panoramic sliding roof is in line with the „XXL“ dimensions of the Sports Tourer; it measures approx. 1.2 square metres, and is therefore roughly twice the size of a conventional sliding roof.

The panoramic sliding sunroof consists of two glass sections, of which the front section is movable. At the touch of a button the front section is raised and slides to the rear. The travel of the moving section takes place outside the vehicle body. This allows a larger roof aperture and ensures that the panoramic sliding sunroof does not restrict the headroom of the occupants. As in the case of a tilting/sliding roof, the moveable roof section can be adjusted to a tilted position. The panoramic sliding sunroof can also be operated by remote control, using the electronic ignition key. Electrically operated, perforated fabric roller blinds on the inside of the panoramic sliding roof provide effective protection from the sun when required.

Outstanding safety thanks to NECK-PRO head restraints, sidebags and windowbags

With two-stage front airbags and belt force limiters (front), belt-buckle and inertia-reel tensioners, sidebags and windowbags, the „Vision R 63 AMG“ conforms to the high Mercedes-Benz standard in terms of occupant protection systems, too. Newly developed NECK-PRO head restraints optimise protection for the driver and front passenger in the event of a rear-end collision.
