Super-Fast Cadillac Seville STSi Impressed at Le Mans
Cadillac strengthened its competitive presence at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, by providing super-high performance versions of the Seville STS as official pace and safety car. Called the Cadillac Seville STSi, the Argentinium silver paintwork pace car is the most extreme Seville yet. Amendments were undertaken on the famous Northstar System’s powertrain and sophisticated chassis control system to ensure full suitability for unique conditions, such as high speed race track cornering at Le Mans.
In Cadillac Seville STSi Northstar delivers an extra 50 horsepower added to the already impressive 300 brake horsepower output, but there are no changes to the internal components of the engine – the block, pistons, camshafts and crankshafts – which remain standard production parts.
Instead, the power increase comes from: Precision machining of the production heads to change the compression ratio from 10.0:1 to 10.45:1, giving higher horsepower and torque ratings above 4000 rpm. Increased air flow in and out of the engine through opening intake and exhaust ports. The exhaust components have a high temperature ceramic coating to cut air friction and to help in engine temperature retention for fuel ignition. More cooling of engine and transmission.
Cadillac’s StabilTrak 2.0, now standard on every 2001 STS, has undergone an extensive software upgrade with algorithms specially written for high performance driving and handling. Other standard STS equipment includes Cadillac’s CVRSS 2.0 (continuously variable road-sensing suspension), bringing optimal body and wheel damping under all driving conditions by adjusting damper settings and responding in real time.
With performance algorithm shifting (PAS) the convenience of the electronically controlled automatic transmission is combined with the response and action of a manual gearbox. Hydra-matic (4T80E) transmission allows for shift points to be recalibrated for high performance driving. Refinements to the chassis add crisper steering with better on-center feel and reduced understeer.
Externally STSi had 18 inch cast aluminum wheels with Goodyear P275/40ZR-18 Eagle F1 GS tires, bigger brakes with oversized rotors, pistons and calipers.
