Chevrolet S-10 Pickup – Guaranteed to do any Job Well
The Chevrolet S-10 Pickup provides a degree of versatility, durability and spaciousness unsurpassed in Europe. It has a split personality – but in the most positive sense. It is a durable, rugged pickup, yet it has comfortable, four seater, car-like qualities, providing room, convenience and go-anywhere, do-anything capability.
It moves into the new model year with an improved optional four cylinder 2.2 liter 120 horsepower engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox to complement the standard Vortec 4300cc V6 power pack. The rugged, reliable and well-proven V6 engine of Chevrolet S-10 Pickup – a close relative of the Chevrolet Blazer – provides quiet operation and great durability and its standard four-speed automatic transmission is quieter and comes with an extended gear life.
Its stout 190 hp (180 hp with 2WD) output has torque ratings of 245lb.ft and 250 lb. ft respectively. The L4 2.2 litre engine is now improved, and is compatible with E85 fuel, the fuel composed of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent gasoline. E85 is a renewable fuel comprised of alcohol produced from grain or agricultural waste. Customers do not experience any significant drivability differences between either fuel. The 4.3 litre V6 engine offers a top speed of 177kph and the 2.2 litre version returns a more-than-adequate 148 kph. Aboard Chevrolet S-10 Pickup is the Insta-Trac shift-on-the-move 4WD system. As well as its handy push-button actuation, Insta-Trac includes a 4WD Low gear for more demanding conditions such as climbing steep gradients or driving through deep snow or mud.
Powertrain enhancements start with a new powertrain control module. This, along with a new enhanced knock detection and spark correction system, help achieve lower emissions, improve performance and efficiency of the V6 engine. Chevrolet S-10 Pickup offers onboard refuelling vapour recovery (ORVR) as part of Chevrolet’s ongoing commitment to protecting the environment. The S-10’s reputation as a versatile on- and off-road performer continues with ABS and a choice of suspension packages. Buyers can choose from the standard independent front suspension or step up to the optional four-wheel drive ZR2 wide stance sport performance package. S-10 is waiting to do a formidable load-moving job, with a base payload of 630 kgs in 4WD (545 kg in 2WD). Kerb weight in the 2WD 2.2 litre engine version is 1556 kg, up to 1715 kgs in the V6 engine in 2WD and a massive 1963kg in the 43WD V6 model. Trailers up to 2903 kg can be handled by the V6 engine in two-wheel drive mode. The vehicle is 5164mm long and 1725mm wide, with a 3211mm wheelbase. Outside, S-10 is all functional, with sturdy cargo tie-down loops, two-tier loading and a rear step bumper for easy cargo bed access. But inside it is comfortable and car-like. Practical and simply adjustable seating and easy-on-the-eye instrumentation are part of the welcome package. It includes such items as power windows, tinted glass, and delayed interior lighting which automatically keeps the dome lamp on for 15 seconds or until the ignition is turned on after the front doors are closed. The retained accessory power feature allows the stereo radio cassette, electric windows and other power features to operate for up to 20 minutes after the ignition has been turned off or until a door is opened.
